Haramaya University

Haramaya University is one of the oldest universities in Ethiopia, established in the early 1950s when the governments of Ethiopia and the United States agreed to jointly establish what was then Alemaya College of Agriculture. Haramaya University is a forerunner in Ethiopian higher education and is recognized as the “father” of three universities: Dire Dawa, Jigjiga, and Oda Bultum. Currently, the university is running major projects in collaboration with national and global partners.

Haramaya University has been working with the Ministry of Health, Regional Health Bureaus, JSI, and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF) to strengthen Health Information Systems (HIS) in Ethiopia by providing technical assistance to regions in Eastern Ethiopia.

Haramaya University’s Capacity Building and Mentorship Project (CBMP) is a remarkable initiative that aims to strengthen the health management information system (HMIS) and digital health systems by focusing on information revolution in the Somali and Harar regions, as well as the Dire Dawa city administration. Established as a center of excellence in Electronic Medical Records (EMR), the project has brought together a consortium of universities, including Jijiga University, Dire Dawa University, and Harar Health Science Colleges, to collaborate and share best practices. The project has targeted a total of 202 health institutions across the three regions.

In Dire Dawa city administration, the project supports 2 general hospitals, 10 Health Centers and 20 Health Posts. In the Harar region, the project supports 1 University Hospital, 1 General Hospital, 8 Woreda health offices, 9 Health Centers, and 36 Health Posts. In the Somali region, the project supports 4 General Hospitals, 5 Woreda health offices, 15 Health Centers, and 94 Health Posts. Through this comprehensive support and mentorship, Haramaya University’s CBMP has become a beacon of excellence, driving the transformation of the healthcare sector and empowering health workers to practice evidence-based decision-making for sustainable health services.
