Hawassa University

Hawassa University, located in the Sidama region of Ethiopia, is known for its diverse academic programs, research, and community services. Among its faculties, the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, established in 1997, offers a range of undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programs in fields such as medicine, public health, and nursing.

Hawassa University’s Capacity Building & Mentorship Program (CBMP) aims to transform the health information system (HIS) by improving data quality and the use of health information for decision-making at various levels through capacity building and digital tools.

The University is also working with and creating consortia with four local universities (Arba Minch, Wolkite, Worabe and Dilla). It operates in three regions (Sidama, Central Ethiopia, and Southern Ethiopia) across 25 woredas/districts, encompassing 25 Woreda Health Offices, 16 hospitals, 93 health centers, and 421 health posts, totaling 555 health institutions. Significant changes in HIS have been documented at HU CBMP, which has implemented cost-effective, innovative approaches in creating model HIS woredas. In addition to documenting and publishing scientific evidence generated from this program, it also supports postgraduate students (Master’s and PhD) in research and undergraduate students.
