Addis Ababa University

Established in 1950, Addis Ababa University (AAU) is one of the oldest and largest higher learning and research institutions in Ethiopia. The University has been a leading center for teaching, research, and community services.

Since 2018, AAU has been supported by the Ministry of Health (MoH), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF), and other partners to conduct implementation research aimed at strengthening the health information system in Ethiopia. The University has built the capacity of health administrators and healthcare workers to foster a culture of information use for decision-making.

The University is also working with and creating consortia with Minilk hospital Medical college. It has supported sub-cities and health facilities in improving data quality and data use, initially starting with three sub-cities (Lideta, Akaki, and Yeka) and expanding to six sub-cities, more than 53 health centers, and three hospitals. AAU has also supported the Addis Ababa City Administration Health Bureau (AACAHB) in implementing the Connected Woreda Program. Additionally, the University has enhanced and innovated digital health solutions and established a “Center of Excellence” in Health Data Analytics. AAU trains capable staff in technical skills to conduct training, mentoring, and assessments while documenting performance, best practices, and dissemination efforts.
